We believe that before we can know our neighbors’ stories, we have to begin by knowing their names. We know that this might be awkward. Maybe you’ve lived in your neighborhood for several years now and still don’t know the people who live closest to you. There’s no better time to change that then now. The only way to get to know your neighbors’ names is to ask! Like Shaun reminded us Sunday, there are only three things that can happen:
- You bring life to them
- They bring life to you
What’s the worst outcome – nothing changes? Isn’t it worth simply asking someone’s name? It might just be the thing that they needed most that day – to be known.
Here are some prompts and tips:
- “I know I’ve lived here a while, and I should really know this, but what was your name again?”
- “Hi, I’m (your name), I know we’ve met several times in the past, but can you remind me of your name again?
- Chances are if you don’t know their name, they don’t know yours.
- Write their name on the magnet and check back here next week for more tips on how together, we can be FOR Our Neighbors.
Didn’t get a magnet on Sunday? No problem! Print this version and hang it on your refrigerator.
